What happens at a Branding Photoshoot with me

If you’ve been thinking about booking a branding photoshoot for your business for the first time but keep wondering what actually happens on the day, you’re definitely not alone.

For a lot of small business owners, booking a branding shoot feels exciting… but also a little intimidating. You might be thinking:

  • What do I wear?

  • What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?

  • Do I need to know how to pose?

  • What even gets photographed?

  • Is it just headshots?

The good news? A branding photoshoot is about so much more than a few nice photos of you smiling at the camera.

It’s about creating a bank of images that actually feel like your business; the personality behind it, the details, the way you work, and the kind of experience you give your clients.

So if you’re curious about what happens at a branding photoshoot, here’s a little look behind the scenes.

First things first, we plan it properly

Before the shoot, we’ll have a discovery phone call and chat about your business, your brand, and how you want your photos to feel. I will also send over a questionnaire to get to know your business a little better

This is such an important part of the process, because the best branding photos aren’t random. They should work for your business, not just look pretty.

We’ll look at things like:

  • what you do

  • who your ideal clients are

  • where you’ll be using the images

  • the overall feel of your brand

  • colours, styling, props, and location ideas

  • the types of photos you actually need

For example, a therapist, florist, maker, coach, or content creator will all need very different kinds of images. Your shoot should reflect you, not a one-size-fits-all Pinterest version of “personal branding.”

We think about the kinds of images you need

A branding photoshoot usually includes a mix of images, rather than just one type of shot.

That might include:

  • relaxed portraits of you

  • you working behind the scenes

  • detail shots of your tools, products, or workspace

  • lifestyle images that show your personality

  • wider images with space for website banners or text

  • content for Instagram, LinkedIn, newsletters, and your website

This is one of the biggest reasons branding photography is so useful. You come away with a gallery full of images that work across your business, not just one new profile picture.

On the day, it’s much more relaxed than people expect

This is probably the bit most people worry about.

A lot of business owners tell me they’re nervous before their shoot because they think they’ll feel stiff, awkward, or like they have no idea what to do.

But honestly? You do not need to turn up knowing how to pose.

My job is to guide you through the whole thing in a way that feels natural and relaxed. I’ll help with where to stand, what to do with your hands, how to move, and how to make everything look effortless without it feeling forced.

You don’t need to perform. You just need to show up as yourself.

The best branding photos usually happen in the in-between moments anyway; when you’re laughing, moving, chatting, working, or just settling into it. I have always been proud that most of my clients come away from my photoshoots saying how much they enjoyed/ felt relaxed during their session.

We’ll photograph more than just your face

Branding photoshoots aren’t just headshots.

Of course, we’ll get some lovely portraits of you looking approachable and professional, but we’ll also capture the details that help tell the story of your business.

That could be:

  • you packing orders

  • writing notes

  • working on your laptop

  • making coffee in your studio

  • setting up for clients

  • using your products or tools

  • chatting, creating, planning, or doing the thing you actually do

These kinds of images help potential clients connect with your brand. They get to see the person behind the business and understand what working with you feels like.

Outfit changes and variety help make the gallery work harder

Depending on your package, we can include outfit changes, different setups, and different backgrounds to give you more variety.

This means your final gallery feels more versatile and gives you content you can use for different parts of your brand.

For example, one outfit might feel more polished and professional, while another feels more relaxed and everyday. Both can be useful, depending on where you’re using the images.

A bit of variety also helps your content stay fresh for longer.

Your location matters too

Branding photos can happen in all sorts of places, depending on your business.

That might be:

  • at home

  • in your workspace or studio

  • in a hired location

  • in a café

  • outdoors

  • in a styled indoor space with good natural light

The right location depends on the story you want your brand to tell.

Some businesses need clean, professional, minimal images. Others need something warmer, more relaxed, or more creative. We choose a setting that fits your brand and supports the overall look you want.

It’s not about looking perfect

This part matters.

A branding photoshoot is not about trying to look like someone else, or creating a polished version of your business that doesn’t actually feel true to you.

It’s about creating images that feel aligned, natural, and professional, while still looking and feeling like you.

The goal is that when someone lands on your website or Instagram, they instantly get a feel for your brand and think, “Yes, this feels like the kind of person I want to work with.”

That connection matters so much more than capturing that ideal image you may have in mind.

After the shoot

Once the shoot is done, I’ll go through the images and carefully edit the final gallery in my usual warm, natural style.

You’ll then receive an online gallery with a selection of images you can use across your website, social media, marketing, newsletters, LinkedIn, and anywhere else your business shows up online.

And the best part? You’ll have a bank of professional images ready to go, which makes showing up online feel so much easier.

No more scrambling for a half-decent selfie or reusing the same one photo from two years ago.

Is a branding photoshoot worth it?

If you’re trying to grow your business and show up more consistently online, then yes, absolutely!

Good branding photos help your business look more professional, more trustworthy, and more like a real brand people want to invest in.

They save you time, make content creation easier, and help people connect with the person behind the business.

And if the idea of being in front of the camera makes you nervous, please know that you don’t have to be “good at photos” to have a branding shoot that works.

You just need the right photographer to guide you through it.
